Hello to everyone,
My name is Ed and I've only been involved in "Entrainment" and such for a relatively short time (about 3 weeks, to be exact). I've gotten hold of a program which produces Binural Beats and a vast array of other things (Subliminal Studio). I think it's great, so far, but the manual that came with it doesn't go into exactly "HOW" to create some of these tones I've been reading so much about. For example: How would I go about creating a 256Hz carrier wave with say a 7.83Hz binural that DOESN'T consist of a 256Hz static noise background and actually sounds like something that you can actually hear?
Just about everything I've tried thus far with this program has been hit-or-miss, and I'd really like to get the full effects and advantages of owning the thing. Especiallly as I've gone and devoted quite a pretty penny to get this going as a home based business. I think it'd help if I could produce something saleable. Any suggestions or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.

Binaural beats, which don't sound like much in themselves, are usually masked with some sort of background music. You do not need to have the binaural beats very loud to get an effect from them. If they are even barely audible they will still work. Most of the time with Centerpointe's holosync CDs all I can hear is the rain and singing bowls. It was only at the higher levels of the program when the carrier frequencies started to get below 30 Hz that I started to really notice them and even then it was more that I felt them with the volume turned up high enough. For making something professional the important thing is to have something which mixes sound well so that it preserves your background music and the binaural beats. I'd have to suggest a different program, though, Neuro-Programmer 2 (http://www.transparentcorp.com/products/software.php). The professional version is about $60 and you can market the files you create with it. In addition to binaural beats, it gives you other entrainment options which can be used without headphones. You also get access to the forums there and advice from much more experienced users of the program. The forums there are much more active, from the looks of things. Sorry about advertising.

Hey Tom,
Thanks so much for your input. Actually, since I posted this question, I've learned quite a bit about the "How-To's" of creating these things. Also, FYI, I also bought the pro version of Neuro Programmer 2 just the other day and you're right, it's looking good so far. I'm also considering spending the $40 to register Brain Wave Generator 3.1 as well, seeing as there's a lot of folks out there who are raving about the thing and from what I've seen of it so far, it looks like it might be a good investment.
Like I said in my first post, I've started a home based business with this stuff and so far I'm getting some pretty good feedback from people who've listened to what I've created so far. The really nice thing is that one of my best friends just happens to be a hypnotherapist out in Vista, CA. , so I bounce pretty much everything off him before it goes into production. Don't want to get anybody more screwed up than they already might be because of the wrong subliminals or the like. Again, thanks for your reply and as soon as I get my website up and running, I'll let everybody know about it. In the meanwhile, I've been bombarded by some info regarding "Isochronic Beats / Tones". I've done a little research on this, but haven't actually heard them before and wondered if anybody else has? Any info would be greatly appreciated, especially considering that if they work as advertised, It'll be my next addition to what I've got so far.

The way a binaural works is that you have two frequencies and the beat frequency is the difference between the lower frequency and the higher frequency. The lower frequency is the carrier frequency. The idea that Bill Harris (www.centerpointe.com) found was that the lower the carrier frequency is, the stronger the impact of a binaural will be. The smaller carrier frequency means that the beat frequency will be a more significant compared to the carrier frequency. 10 Hz is not much compared to a 440 Hz carrier, but his programs start with a carrier frequency of around 120 Hz according to the explanation I got from the support staff there. By the time when you get to the end of the program, the carrier frequency is around 5 Hz and that 10 Hz beat frequency has become very significant. Centerpointe suggests a specific model of headphones by Sony (I think the model was something like MDR 600 and they are a lot cheaper on e-bay) that runs from 5 Hz to 30 KHz. I see an auction which is going to end soon(http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-MDR-V600-v-600-V-600-Headphones_W0QQitemZ270031501954QQihZ017QQcategoryZ14985QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) and the "buy it now" price is $35 while Centerpointe would charge almost $100.

Isochronic beats use pulses of a frequency with silence in between them. That would have the same sort of impact as a binaural with a carrier frequency of 0 Hz. Smiley I have used isochronic beats both with headphones and without them, and while it is true that the entrainment effect is a little stronger with the headphones I still felt it like usual without them. The headphones were more a reminder to stop, keep my eyes closed, and relax and to go with it. Without the headphones I had more of a tendency to get up and open my eyes and check my e-mail, but that is not the fault of the isochronic beats.

There are a lot of people over at forums.astraldynamics.com who favor BW Gen. They use it primarily to assist with having out-of-body experiences. I don't like the program very much, but they seem to. I just think it is hard to use.

Gamma entrainment seems to be a lot more popular now as a result of a study that was done with Tibetan Buddhist meditators. The alpha and theta stuff was mostly TM and Zen. It was found that the Tibetan Buddhist monks, whose practice was based on cultivating compassion and who had tens of thousands of hours logged of meditation had higher levels of gamma than usual and especially on the left side of the brain. Centerpointe has been making a gamma CD that they will be glad to sell to me for $39 that uses ocean waves as a background sound. I have heard that background because they use it on a CD they call "floating" and it just irritates me. Maybe you have something better.

Hello Tom,

Thank you for the interesting nuggets of information in your post.

Re using headphones, I think for the binaural beats to be created inside the space of the head, more specifically on the auditory cortex region of the brain, headphones are a must. Frequency X played in one ear, and Frequency Y played in the other ear, lead to the synthesis of sound at a frequency of Y minus X right on the auditory cortex. The brain's own entrainment mechanism takes up from there, to lead your mind to a delta, theta, alpha or beta state. Listening w/o stereo headphones may not have the same effect, imo.

Since the carrier frequency too has an effect on the brain, I think Centerpointe have a point when they start it from 120 Hz and bring it to 5 Hz by the time the tape ends.

Your point about the recent popularity of Gamma Wave entrainment is well taken. Again my personal opinion is that the Tibetan monk experiment is incomplete; more research needs to be done on the subject. As far as I know, Gamma Waves are produced by the brain when the mind is focusing on thoughts of compassion. Are they also produced when the thoughts are not so positive? This is as yet unanswered.

Gamma is the highest frequency range among all brainwaves (between 26 and 100 Hz). When the monks focused on compassion, their brain resonated in gamma range. The cause was: thoughts of compassion. The result was: gamma entrainment. So, when people sit down with a Gamma Entrainment CD, do they hope to rouse compassion in themselves as a result? (If A, then B. But if B, then A?) I think it would have been insightful if, as a corollary, the same batch of monks were subjected to Gamma entrainment (without their focusing on compassionate thoughts), and the results recorded. As things stand now, I think the popularity might be a tad premature.

Just my two-pence. Smiley

Cheers,
Sanjay.

All I know about isochronic beats is that they do seem to work without headphones and more effectively with them. I had to try several times to make certain.

Centerpointe is not the only one making gamma CDs now. So far I have heard that it is much more stressful than delta entrainment and that maintaining gamma for long periods of time should be approached gradually. That would seem to be the result of not using the compassion based approach. I don't know. It doesn't seem to do much for me except making it a lot easier to get more done at work. I've also used beta for the same purpose, but it was hard to tell if one was better than the other. We should start to see results because there are a lot of people using gamma now. The original study was based on something like 5 monks. Smiley

Hi Tom,

Well said. Smiley

It would be quite good if all consumers / users of Gamma Entrainment CDs post and give their authentic feedback on their experience.

Cheers,
Sanjay.

Hi Tom,

Thanks to your post, I dusted out from my pile a long-ago note on Gamma entrainment, and have published it on my blog. You may wish to read it, for whatever it is worth! Smiley

Cheers,
Sanjay.

Actually, I'm not much into entrainment at all anymore. I read Eric Pepin's point of view that there is only so much that you can get with working on the physical brain. It helped me when I completed the holosync program, because I finally felt I could meditate, but for the second half of the program it seemed like my experiences were better without the entrainment. I just had to make sure so I kept getting the next level.

Hello Tom,

That's true. Between external stimulus (entrainment) and internal stimulus (self-motivation), definitely the latter has an edge! Smiley

I too recommend binaural beats and its variants to those of my students whose motivation levels are low, or who find it difficult to meditate or reach the theta levels on their own. And, from time to time, the "push from outside" does indeed help. Smiley

Cheers,
Sanjay

It isn't that I don't see a continuing value for technology, so much as that I find it is more useful to meditate without binaurals because I am more open to having things change during the process. If I use a delta binaural I expect to go down to delta and stay there for a certain level of time and return to beta. Each meditation is like the rest, but at least I am getting my time put in. That was what I liked most about binaurals. It forced me to spend the time on the meditation cushion every day. Now I like it so much that I regret missing a day and I prefer to have the flexibility of seeing how aware and present I can be each time. It is hard to turn over control and at the same time try to see how aware and present I can be. As a result, I am now thinking that maybe I should look into making my own subliminals and being able to focus on a specific quality to increase, like love or faith, and just watching for increases of those qualities during meditation sessions while I do my own thing.

Hi Tom,

This is a follow-up to my other post to you about gamma binaurals.

I see you posted this back in Oct. '06.  Have you begun making your own?  Do you add affirmations?

I've been on the awareness path a long time but recently am bogged down.  I have many years as a Vipassanna meditator but don't meditate recently and am unmotivated to get my desk cleared.  I have a long history of lucid dreaming - on the natch - not induced, but nothing lately.  So, I'm turning to externals. . . . like binaural cd's.

Certainly I'm interested in compassion but haven't used the other (beginner?) binaurals yet and certainly don't want to go mad (although some people say the same thing about Vipassanna - that it's too advanced and will drive you mad.  I would like to purchase/get a gamma binaural.

The last binaural I used regularly was "The Secret" by Brain Sync. I gave it six weeks of daily use like they said to, but although it did feel like it was helping it did nothing anywhere near as much as the advertisement for it seemed to claim.

Vipassana is great. I have been doing it for years, as a practicing Buddhist. It doesn't require being motivated to change anything, so much as that as you become increasingly aware of how you sabotage your life it becomes harder to keep doing it.

Going mad comes from resistance. I wouldn't suggest worrying about it. It is better to throw yourself completely in to what you are doing in every moment, because the madness comes from being partial.

When your intuition tells you to work on compassion you will do it and it will be more meaningful than if it is just another item on a list of things you feel you should do.
