1  General / Welcome -- START HERE! / Contact Details on: November 05, 2013, 02:00:37 PM
I realize that since a change of board software some time ago, there have been problems with new members trying to register, existing members trying to post etc. I can see that some people have given up, including the admins (and probably the owner of this board).

I enjoyed discussing various self-development topics with all of you, and I am grateful that some of you took the time to contact me personally with questions.

For those of you who are interested, I have a blog at http://7sigma.wordpress.com/ where I discuss various topics such as self-development resources, high IQ, gifted and talented issues, workplace issues and health products/services.  I also have a website http://www.sevensigma.info that expands upon some of those themes and where I have posted various articles about study and memory techniques, cognitive enhancement and applied psychophysiology.

I will leave my account here active for now.

Hello fellow self-developers!  For various reasons I have not checked in here for quite a while, but I never entirely forgot this community and would like to resume where I/we left off.

For those members who have joined in the last few months, my primary interests are in matters of intelligence/IQ and ability development, neuroscience, neurotechnology and mind machines. I'm always happy to answer questions about those topics in which I may have useful knowledge to share.

The free stuff wasn't worth the time spent filling out the registration form.

7  Self Improvement / Health & Wellbeing / Re: I've started going to the gym on: February 01, 2012, 11:33:32 AM
Now here is a surprise that has come up as part of my gym routine, and I thought that I would share it here.

My fitness levels had pegged, and I had reached a plateau. The problem seemed to arise from the fact that my legs kept cramping every time I tried to reach beyond my limits on the treadmill, exercise bike or whatever. It was very uncomfortable.

I asked my trainer what he thought, and he asked me to write down everything I was eating over the course of a week. Then he found it - I was deficient in SALT!

We are always told to cut down on salt, and that it's bad for you, etc. etc.  So I thought that as I don't eat processed foods, and eat vegetables without added salt, that I was being really healthy. This is what they don't tell you: if you are very physically active, you play sports or you work out, YOU NEED THE SALT! It gets sweated out and you need to replace it.

I started adding salt to my dinner and IMMEDIATELY my fitness levels started improving again. It's one simple table condiment, but it's the thing that has made the most difference to my fitness and training routine!

There are only so many ideas, techniques etc. and I bet if you categorised the whole lot into groupings, it would all boil down to relatively few types of self-development product.

The reason there are so many out there is because once one author releases something that works, a whole lot of other people jump on the bandwagon. Often, this is re-released or re-hashed to suit a more modern audience. I don't really care to speculate what was the earliest "law of attraction" type product, for example. But I do know that it's not a new idea, and that following Rhonda Byrne's success, a HUGE number of people published products with their own take on the same general idea, with many of them trying to come up with some spin on it that gave the impression that theirs was the "missing bit of data" or some such, just so that people who already had a groaning bookshelf would buy theirs in the hope that it would work.

God, I sound like a cynic, don't I? But I've been through pretty much everything that's out there, and this is why now I am strictly into what I think of as "hard" versus "soft" self development - I only use things that have tangible results.

With things like neurotechnology, it's a fast-moving field, and I can understand why there would be constant new products released - a better EEG, a better light/sound machine or whatever. But as soon as someone starts putting their own spin on it, e.g. "Buy our entrainment CDs, and you'll find yourself MANIFESTING MORE!!!" - I run like hell.

I really wouldn't hold out any hopes about getting a response from Michael. He had a terrible accident a few years ago which left him paralyzed from the neck down and living in poverty. These free AVS magazine downloads from Michael Landgraf's site are all worth a read, but if you download the 2010 one and I think the article starts on Page 18 of that issue, you'll find out exactly what happened to Michael Hutchison.

I was lucky enough to attend one of Dave Siever's training seminars and I think he mentioned something similar, about technology moving on. I find his Mind Alive blog worth a read, and there are lots of articles on AVS/CES/tDCS on his site.

I know not everyone would find this an attractive route to go down, but I find myself drawn more and more to serious neuroscience, and further away from the puff-piece self-help market. That's why I think people like Dave are valuable contacts to make, because they are serious professionals in the brain science field.

I'm pleased to say that I've kept up my gym routine. August to January - that's five months and counting!

There are a lot of new people in our gym at the moment, who are probably doing the New Year resolution thing. I'm not going to do what most of them will probably do and fall off the program.

Several people have commented that I have lost some of my "spare tyre". I have slowly noticed my physical strength increasing, although the main thing was to increase fitness levels, not specifically to work on muscle power. And I can now run in short bursts, which is something I've never been able to do, although my knees are still giving me a few problems here and there.

14  Self Improvement / Psychic Abilities & Phenomenon / Do psychic training products actually work? on: January 13, 2012, 10:03:18 AM
It doesn't have to be the "Be Psychic" kit, it can be any course, book, CD set, or any type of information product promising "psychic powers".
15  Self Improvement / Lucid Dreaming & More! / Re: can someone explain this pleaes? on: January 13, 2012, 09:53:48 AM
Hmmmm...more than happy to be proven wrong, but this sounds like snake oil to me.
